About Jerry
Jerry was a mainstay in the recycling effort for the City of Bangor from the program’s inception
until Jerry’s retirement in 2014. Jerry was always quick to step up and lend a hand whenever
he could, including by serving on the Board of the Maine Resource Recovery Association
(“MRRA”) for many years. His calm demeanor, historical wisdom, keen observations, and quick
wit proved invaluable as the MRRA worked to achieve its’ mission of assisting the Maine
community with implementing professional solid waste management systems that are environmentally and economically sustainable.
As the Training Officer for the Bangor Public Works Department, Jerry very much believed that
training and education were key to success in any endeavor, and he was instrumental in the
success of the MRRA Annual Conference. In fact, the very first MRRA conferences were hosted
by Jerry at the Bangor Recycling Center. Later, he could often be found singing and playing the
piano during conference social events.
It is for these reasons MRRA is proud to offer the Jerry T. Hughes Waste Wise Fund.
